The Family Man

The Christian community mourns the loss of a great figure, a man who dedicated his life to his faith, family and psychology. The passing of Dr James Dobson signifies the end of an era, a book that was filled with conviction, profound compassion and a life filled with works aimed at strengthening families.  For decades, he has been the voice of advice and reassurance in the homes of millions as they go through the complexities of marriage, parenting and life.

As a child psychologist, he saw fractures in the family unit through his observations, and he felt a divine call to act. In 1977, he founded Focus on the Family from a humble radio broadcast in a garage; it grew into a global ministry.   

Through his daily radio program, he offered practical, biblically grounded wisdom. He spoke with a unique blend of authority and empathy, making psychological concepts accessible and comforting anxious parents with the simple, powerful assurance that they were not alone. Books like ‘Dare to Discipline’ and ‘The Strong-Willed Child’ became essential resources, offering frameworks of love, boundaries, and respect.

He taught generations of parents to value the precious, fleeting years of childhood. He taught husbands and wives the meaning of selfless love and commitment. He taught a culture about the value of the family as the bedrock of a healthy society.

While his passing leaves a void, we remember a life extraordinarily well-lived—a life dedicated not to self, but to service. A life spent pointing others toward faith, hope, and love. His true legacy is etched in the lives of the families he helped heal, the marriages he helped save, and the children who grew up in homes shaped by his principles of love, discipline, and grace.

You fought the good fight, you finished the race, you kept the faith. Your work here is done, and your legacy will continue to echo through the generations of families you helped to build, strengthen, and preserve.
